FREDERICKSBURG—The Southampton High School cross-country team finished its season Friday at the Group AA Region I meet at Loriella Park in Fredericksburg.

No runners from Southampton or the Southside District finished in the top 15 to advance to the state meet.

“The meet was a good experience for my kids,” said Southampton Coach Scott Edwards. “I feel we had a great season even though we didn’t reach our goal of a district championship.”

“We were very young with three tenth-graders and one freshman in the top seven for the boys and three freshman in the top seven for the girls,” Edwards added. “Running against the kids from the Bay Rivers and Battlefield showed them just how hard they need to work in the off season to compete next year.”

Senior Tabbitha Bruck led the Lady Indians by placing 52nd with a time of 23:50 and was followed by freshman Mary Hudgins, 68th 26:19; junior Holly Moore, 72nd 26:49; freshman Jessica Fox, 76th 27:22; freshman Sarah Giorgi, 78th 28:54; senior Megan Owens, 80th 29:56; and junior Amber Gurganus, 82nd 30:57.

Sophomore Forrest South led the Southampton boys, finishing the 73rd in a time of 20:19, and was followed by junior Kevin Watford, 74th 20:56; senior Daniel Lowdermilk, 79th 21:50; sophomore Enoch Westover, 80th 21:57; and freshman Cole Jarratt, 82nd 22:36.

“This year we wont lose many of the top runners, but to compete at a higher level next year, the returning runners are going to have to put in more hours during the spring and summer so they come into the fall season where they left off this year,” Edwards said.
