COURTLAND—Tidewater Academy’s volleyball defeated Southampton Academy 3-0 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference match on Thursday.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-16, 25-23.

“Southampton switched their hitters and that threw us off a little bit and we came out a little bit flat,” said Tidewater Coach Jimmy Dunn. “The girls hung in there and came away with a win.”

Leaders for the Lady Warriors were senior Cary Beahm with 13 kills and 10 digs and senior Tyler Stephenson had 18 assists.

“That was a tough loss. It’s been a tough year,” said SA Coach Frank Seal. “They’re a good team though they deserve to be number one in the conference.”

Leaders for the Lady Raiders were junior Katelyn Newsome and junior Brooke Whitley each had 8 kills, Newsome also had 5 blocks. Senior Whitley Smith had 29 assists, and Kelsey Whitehead added 19.

The Lady Warriors improved to 18-3 overall and 12-1 in the conference, while the Lady Raiders drop to 9-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

“Were going to have to pick it up going into the tournament,” said Dunn.

TA at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, will host Brunswick Academy in the first round of the VCC tournament while SA is scheduled to host Kenston Forest at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“Whoever comes to play us better come ready to play,” said Seal.
