EMPORIA—Southampton High School on Friday lost its Southside District opener 19-6 to Greensville.
The Indians dropped to 1-6 overall, while Greensville improved to 1-6.
The Indians’ only scored came with five minutes left in the game when senior Jerry Wright ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
Greensville took a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
“Just before the second half, we made some good adjustments, controlled the ball most of the half, but we just couldn’t put it in,” said Southampton Coach Wes Griffith.
Greensville scored with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, taking a 13-0 lead. After the kickoff, Wright scored his touchdown, closing Greensville’s lead to 13-6.
Greensville scored the final touchdown on a 2-yard run on a quarterback sneak.
“We made some good adjustments, but had a penalty here and a fumble there,” Griffith said. “If we would’ve played the first half like the second half, I think it would’ve been a different story.”
