ISLE OF WIGHT—With four seconds remaining in the game, Isle of Wight Academy’s Zeb Warnick returned a 95-yard interception to seal the Chargers’ 33-20 win over Broadwater Academy on Friday.

“It was a barnburner,” said IWA Coach Dale Chapman. “In my history of playing Broadwater, it always comes down to something like this.”

With 3:40 minutes left in the game, Warnick scored on a six-yard run to put the Chargers up 19-14.

On the kickoff, Viking Wesley Shrieves ran 90 yards for a touchdown, which gave Broadwater a 20-19 lead.

On the Vikings’ kickoff, Warnick looked like he was going to repay the favor, but was stopped around the Vikings’ 40-yard line. A penalty brought the pigskin back to the Charger 25-yard line.

The Chargers moved the ball, and with help from a Viking penalty, reached Broadwater’s 37-yard line. From there, Mat Brummett broke free to score a touchdown for IWA. Warnick crossed the goal line on the two-point conversion, and the Chargers were up 27-20 with 2:20 remaining in the game.

After a deep kick by the Chargers, the Vikings set up on their 20-yard line. The Vikings used a mixture of runs and passes to move the ball. With 42 seconds remaining in the game, they had advanced to the Chargers’ 15-yard line.

IWA sacked the Viking quarterback to move the ball back to the Charger 24-yard line. Next, a false start by the Vikings pushed it back to the 29-yard line.

The Vikings having 12 seconds left to play, made an unsuccessful pass. Going to the air with four seconds remaining, Warnick intercepted the Vikings’ pass, and dodged and weaved defenders for 95 yards for the touchdown.

“This team never ceases to amaze me,” Chapman said. “We’ve been down in numbers, but week after week, they continue to work and work.”

The Chargers were first on the scoreboard following a first-quarter punt return for a touchdown by Brummett.

The Vikings went ahead 7-6 after a touchdown by Adam Bowen. Brendon Burrows booted the extra point.

The Chargers answered back on a touchdown pass from Brandon Saxby to Gage Rogers. Josh Wehi kicked the extra point.

In the third quarter, the Vikings went ahead 14-13 after a touchdown run by Bowen. Burrows added the extra point.
