COURTLAND—The Southampton High School volleyball team’s Southside District win over Park View on Thursday could result in the Lady Indians taking the district title.
“Tonight’s win was huge,” said SHS Coach Chad Brock. “The winner of tonight’s match will most likely be the district champ.”
“We played our best ball of the year,” Brock added. “If we can play like this for the remainder of the season, we will go deep into the regional tournament.”
The Lady Indians won 3-1 and improved to 6-0 in the district and 14-2 overall. Set scores were 25-23, 13-25, 25-17, 25-10.
“The first set was really tight,” Brock said. “I don’t think there was more than a three- or four-point differential the entire time.”
“There was a lot of tension heading into tonight’s match because we were without one of our starting middles, Madison Cabell,” he added. “We have been working hard all week to prepare for that and played well, and then I think we took a big sigh of relief and let the second set slip away. We didn’t let that get into our heads though and poured it on in the next two sets.”
SHS sophomore Megan Duck recorded 9 kills and 2 blocks. Junior Madeleine Kahle added 25 kills and 2 blocks. Junior setters Grayson Drake and Samantha Billups each recorded 20 assists.
Grayson had 3 blocks and 7 kills, and Billups had 1 block and 2 kills.
“We finally got our outside hitters involved tonight with juniors Kaylee Edwards and Lindsey Harrup recording 5 kills each,” Brock said. “We will need the extra offense down the stretch.”
