Chargers remain unbeaten in VCC with 40-14 win

LAWRENCEVILLE – The Isle of Wight Academy Chargers won their second straight Virginia Commonwealth Conference game of the season with a 40-14 victory over Brunswick Academy.

“We anticipated a physical game and it was,” Chargers Coach Dale Chapman said. “We had some reservations, but the guys came through and played tough.”

IWA rushed for 258 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns. Two Charger runners hit double figures Friday with senior Zeb Warnick carrying the ball eight times for 111 yards and classmate Mat Brummett hitting 106 yards on 13 carries.

Junior quarterback Brandon Saxby went 5-for-9 for 87 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Chargers opened the scoring on their first drive of the game when Saxby passed to senior receiver Alex Fronfelter for a 12-yard touchdown. Sophomore Josh Wehi’s kick was good and IWA took a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing offensive possession Warnick scored on a three-yard run, but Wehi missed the extra point and the Chargers took a 13-0 lead.

Brunswick’s Charles Belmonte returned the kickoff back 75 yards for the score. The extra point was good and BA cut the Charger lead to 13-7.

Saxby connected with Aaron Fronfelter for 75 yards and the touchdown. The Wehi kicked increased the IWA lead to 20-7.

Wehi returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown for the Chargers. He missed the kick and IWA took a 26-7 lead.

Senior Hunter Triplett scored on a five-yard run. Wehi’s kick gave the Chargers a 33-7 lead.

Belmonte scored again for Brunswick. This time with a three-yard run. The kick was good and cut the Charger lead to 33-14.

Warnick scored again on a four-yard run and the Wehi kick was good to cap the IWA win at 40-14.

The Chargers take on Fuqua at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Isle of Wight.
