EMPORIA—Southampton High School senior Tabbitha Bruck’s win in Wednesday’s cross country meet led the Lady Indians to a first-place finish and a tie with Park View for the lead spot in the Southside District.

There are five more races for the regular season.

Southampton won with 29 points, followed by Park View with 30. Greensville and Franklin also participated.

“The girls did a great job yesterday,” said Southampton Coach Scott Edwards. “Many of them had season best runs.”

Bruck led the entire race and finished with a time of 23:48. Other top runners for the Lady Indians were Jessica Fox, fourth in 25:12; Mary Hudgins, fifth in 25:21; Kelsey Thomas, ninth in 26:48; Sarah Giorgi, 10th in 27:36; Holley Moore, 11th in 27:39; Amber Gurganus, 15th in 29:29; and Megan Owens, 16th in 29:33. For Franklin, eighth-grader Summer Winston came in fourth overall with a time of 25:02. Eighth-grader Vanessa Stone placed 10th and freshman Jayla Cross was 15th.

The Southampton boys finished second behind Greensville, and in front of Prince Edward, Park View and Franklin.

“The boys didn’t have a very good day,” Edwards said. “The course was very muddy and their times didn’t improve like they should have. Many of them were slower than the previous two races.”

The top Indian finishers were Daniel Lowdermilk, fourth in 20:110; Kevin Watford, sixth in 20:35; Cole Jarratt, 10th in 21:24; Forrest South, 11th in 21:38; and Alex Dunlow, 13th in 21:49.

The boys are tied for first in the district with Greensville.

Southampton at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, will run on Prince Edward’s course.
