FARMVILLE—Southampton High School’s golf team for a second year in a row took the Southside District title after winning its fifth match of the season on Thursday.
The title qualifies the team for the region tournament on Oct. 1 and 2 in Williamsburg. Seniors Jordan Francis, Billy Britton, Lewis Mayes and Steven Rhinard, and sophomores Hunter Peck and Brandon Munford will play in the event, said Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst.
“We’re really excited about it,” Whitehurst said. “That was our goal at the beginning of the season.”
Southampton shot a 154, Parkview 162, host Prince Edward 185 and Greensville 204.
Francis won Thursday’s match, shooting a 34 for a one-over par on the nine-hole Longwood Country Club course in Farmville. It was his first win of the season.
“He’s been playing well the last two matches,” Whitehurst said. “The greens have been rough, and he’s been hitting the ball.”
Britton shot a 38 and Mayes a 39.
From Tuesday’s match at Lake Gaston, Park View took first with a 156. Southampton shot 159, Greensville 175 and Prince Edward 190.
Rhinard led the Indians, scoring a 38 on the par-36 course and placing second overall. Britton followed with a 39.
