Rogers’ kickoff return seals Charger victory

PORTSMOUTH—An 87-yard kickoff return by junior Gage Rogers in the fourth quarter helped seal a 37-14 Isle of Wight Academy victory over Portsmouth Christian on Saturday.

Coach Dale Chapman said the Chargers played well coming off a loss to win the game that started at 5 p.m.

“It was smoking hot right at game time,” he said. “The guys hung in there as far as being in shape.”

Senior Mat Brummett opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a three-yard touchdown run. Josh Wehi’s extra point kick was good.

Senior Zeb Warnick scored on a run from seven yards out in the second quarter. Wehi’s kick was good, and the Chargers took a 14-7 lead in to the half.

Brummett scored again in the third quarter from 12 yards out. Wehi’s kick put the Chargers up 21-7.

Rogers’ kick return made the score 27-7.

Wehi kicked a 38-yard field goal and junior Brandon Saxby connected on a seven-yard touchdown pass to senior Alex Fronfelter put the Chargers up in the fourth quarter.

IWA moves to 1-1 and doesn’t play this week. The Chargers open Virginia Commonwealth Conference play with visiting Kenston Forest at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14.
