SOUTH HILL—Southampton High School’s golf team picked up its third win of the season and senior Lewis Mayes took his first title of the season during the Southside District match at South Hill Country Club on Thursday.

Mayes scored a 75 on the 18-hole, 71-par course.

“It was a good run for him,” said Southampton Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst. “He’s been struggling a little bit. Hopefully this will boost his confidence.”

Southampton scored a 309 and host Park View followed with 320. Whitehurst didn’t have scores for Greensville and Prince Edward.

Southampton seniors Steve Rhinhard, Billy Britton and Jordan Francis all tied for third overall with scores of 78 each.

Southampton leads the district and Parkview follows with one win.

The Indians will host the district match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Cypress Cove Country Club outside Franklin.
