GASBURG—For the first time in Southampton High School history, the golf team scored under 300 during a match.

The Indians won Thursday’s Southside District match at Lake Gaston Resort in Gasburg with a 298, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Leading the way was senior Billy Britton who shot a 71. It was the second time this season he’s shot under par.

“Billy’s just a good player in general,” said Southampton Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst. “I’m not surprised. He’s a good golfer and I’m happy he’s playing well.”

“It’s nice to see all the hard work paying off,” Whitehurst added.

Sophomore teammates Brandon Munford and Hunter Peck shot personal bests at 74 and 81, respectively, on the 72-par course. Two days earlier, during the season opener at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin, Peck shot a 95.

Senior Jordan Francis placed third for Southampton with a 76 and senior Lewis Mayes took fourth with a 77.

Park View took second with a 316 followed by Greensville with 336 and Prince Edward with 435.

The Indians at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, will play at the Longwood University golf course in Farmville. Prince Edward will host.
