DENDRON—Old Dominion Electric Cooperative has suspended its permitting activity to build Virginia’s largest coal-fueled power plant in Surry County.

ODEC cited the Environmental Protection Agency’s new, more stringent regulations and changes in market conditions as factors to stop the work on the $6 billion Cypress Creek Power Station, according to a statement.

In November, the EPA finalized regulations to sharply reduce mercury emissions from power plants.

Both Isle of Wight and Southampton county boards of supervisors voted to oppose the plant.
