Wakefield/Waverly wins first round of tournament

WAKEFIELD—The 15- and 16-year-old Wakefield/Waverly baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning before defeating Hopewell 13-2 in the opening round of the Appomattox River District Tournament.

The Colts sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and 11 in the fourth inning for five more runs.

Dillon Hasty led the attack with two triples and three RBIs. Dylan Beale added three RBIs and Jake Pope accounted for two.

The pitching of Brynner Porter, Kyle Hooper and Hasty limited Hopewell to two single hits, while striking out nine.

Wakefield at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, will travel to Prince George.
