COURTLAND—Southampton High School’s Tanner Winters picked up his fifth win of the season, throwing a four-hit shutout and striking out nine during round one of the region tournament on Monday.

The top-seeded Indians defeated third-ranked Spotsylvania 4-0 and will host the semifinals of the state-qualifying tournament at 4:30 p.m. today, May 30. They will play No. 1-ranked King George.

Southampton turned a double play in the first inning of Monday’s game with the bases loaded. Junior Mason Wright gloved a ground ball and fed sophomore Hayden Spalding, who completed the play.

The Indians got ahead in the fourth inning when Wright drew a two-out walk, Winters reached base on an error by the Knights’ shortstop and sophomore Jack Bunn doubled down the right-field line to plate both.

The Indians struck twice more with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Bunn doubled in courtesy runner Brandon Knight from first base. Junior Jake Pope doubled in Bunn with a deep line drive to left-center.

Bunn accounted for two hits and three RBIs.

Both teams committed one error. Southampton tallied six hits.
