SA baseball team to play for state title Saturday

COLONIAL HEIGHTS—The Southampton Academy baseball team will play for the state title at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights after defeating Fuqua 5-4 during Thursday’s semifinals.

SA led 4-1, but Fuqua was able to tie the game in the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh leadoff hitter Matt Nixon took first base after being hit by a pitch. Nixon took second on a fielder’s choice groundout by Carson Camp.

Wesley Barnes and Jacob Holland were intentionally walked to load the bases for Matt Rose, who hit a single and scored Nixon to win the game.

Jacob Holland pitched six innings, giving up five hits and striking out five. Tonee Hill came in relief in the seventh inning and had one strikeout for the win.

Nixon went 1-for-3 and scored two runs. Camp went 2-for-4 and Rose went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Coach Tim Nixon said he was proud of his team’s performance this season.
