SHS first place in district

SOUTH HILL—The Southampton High School softball team took sole possession of first place after defeating Park View 11-1 on Thursday.

Both teams were 4-1 going into the Southside District game.

“This was a big win for the ladies,” said Southampton Coach Susan Melbye. “They wanted to win this game to prove that they were one of the top teams in the district. We have to stay focused and continue to play our game.”

In the first inning, the Lady Indians batted around, scoring four runs. Kaylee Edwards and Emily Nelson got base hits and Madison Cabell drew a walk. Ashley Haydu hit an RBI single followed by Marisa Cabell’s two-RBI single.

In the second inning, Southampton’s DeMone’ Brickhouse started off with a left hand drag to reach onto first with her speed. Edwards advanced Brickhouse with a base hit and Nelson knocked in Brickhouse, extending the Lady Indians’ lead to 5-0.

Southampton scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Southampton played Brunswick on Thursday. Results were not available as of press time.
