COURTLAND—An inside-the-park grand slam by Southampton High School’s Marisa Cabell in the second inning highlighted the Lady Indians’ 11-1 win over Sussex Central on Monday.
The senior scooted around the bases on a deep fly ball to center field and escaped the tag at home to plate her second home run of the season.
The win runs the Lady Indians’ record to 9-1.
The four runs put the Southampton ahead for good as Ashlee Buehner battled for the win. Buehner had a tough time finding the zone, got the Tigers to put the ball in play and use her defense to get some key outs.
Buehner scattered six Tiger hits, hit three batters and walked another as Sussex scored.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Lady Indians tacked on three insurance runs, using a pair of walks and three base hits. DeMonè Brickhouse had an RBI single and the inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double by Kaylee Edwards, putting the home team up 7-1.
Kaylee Harris and Candace Earls walked to book end a TaLisha Jenkins single to load the bases with no outs. Kaylee Edwards cleared the bases with a triple and then scored on an Emily Nelson single. Ashley Haydu followed a Madison Cabell walk with a base hit that plated Nelson with the game winning run.
