POWHATAN—Southampton Academy’s Barclay Gatten remains undefeated in singles play this season, and was the lone winner during the Lady Raiders’ 1-8 loss to host Blessed Sacrament Huguenot on Thursday.

Gatten defeated Marie Mullins 2-8 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference match.

Blessed Sacrament is the top team in the conference this year; five of its six players returned from last year.

“Our lack of experience was our main obstacle today,” said SA Coach Joann Gatten. “The SA girls all played with a lot of heart and hustled their entire matches.”

SA girls losing matches were Megan Drewry to Anna Ransone 2-8, Olivia Fox to Jaime Hall 2-9, Rebecca Lewis to Olivia Fowkes 3-8, Kirsten Wachsmann to Katie Clark 2-8 and Carrie Beale to Alyssia Doebler 2-8.

In doubles action, Gatten/Fox suffered their first lost of the season to Mullins/Ransone 6-8. Also losing for the Lady Raiders were Drewry/Lewis to Hall/Fowkes 1-8 and Wachsmann/Beale to Liza/Townsend 4-7 in a tiebreaker.
