WAVERLY—The Southampton Academy tennis team opened its season with a 7-2 win over Tidewater Academy Wednesday.

SA top seeds junior Barclay Gatten and senior Megan Drewry won matches 8-2, while third-seed sophomore Olivia Fox won 8-1.

Fourth-seed senior Rebecca Lewis lost 5-8, while fifth-seed freshman Kristen Wachsmann won a tiebreaker 7-5 and sixth-seed Junior Alex Grizzard won 8-3.

SA lost four of its top six players from last year, noted Coach JoAnne Gatten.

“The girls had less than two weeks of practice before their first match and have a few things to work out, but I am proud of their effort and enthusiasm for the game,” Gatten said.

The Lady Raiders played Fuqua Thursday in Farmville. Results weren’t available as of press time.
