William Newsom picked up 10 true strikes and two 9-pin sets, which are considered strikes in a no-tap tournament.

His score qualified him to play at no charge in this weekend’s Pro-Am Tournament at Franklin Bowling Center. William will play at 8 p.m. today, March 16.

The son of Tammy and Wendell Newsom from the Burdette area on Monday bowled a 279; his highest game was a 287.

William, who started bowling when he was 8, had a 172 average during the winter of 2010-11, according to bowl.com. His current average is not available.

The Southampton Middle School student plays in the youth league at Franklin Bowling Center and for Tidewater Team Challenge, which competes around Hampton Roads.
