COURTLAND—Southampton Academy eighth-grade shortstop Ashten Hinkle’s double play highlighted the Lady Raiders’ 2-1 win over Brunswick Academy Tuesday.
Hinkle fielded the ball, stepped on second base to get the runner out and then threw out the first-base runner.
Coach Jeb Bradshaw also attributed the Virginia Commonwealth Conference win to seven players getting hits.
“I was proud of the team,” Bradshaw said. “They played as a unit and did very well.”
Senior Chelsea Speight picked up her second win, giving up four hits and striking out two against a good hitting team, Bradshaw said.
Senior Rachel Holland got on base in the second inning and advanced to second on senior Brigitte Bradshaw’s single. Junior Whitley Smith hit a double to score Holland and Bradshaw, giving SA a 2-0 lead.
Brunswick scored its run in the third inning.
SA is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the VCC.
