Chowan sweeps doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C.—The Chowan University baseball team moved to 4-2 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association after a weekend sweep of Shaw University.

Chowan opened the series with a doubleheader sweep of the Bears on Saturday. The Hawks cruised to 15-1 and 11-0 wins on Saturday and followed that up with a 6-2 win to wrap up the series on Sunday. The Hawks improved to 12-13 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Chowan’s Brandon Mack put on an offensive display after going 7-for-13 at the plate over the three-game series to pace Chowan at the plate. Brett Garrett shut out the Bears on the mound for his second win of the season in the 11-0 win. Garrett threw a complete game in which he struck out seven and gave up just two hits.

Ryan Bradshaw helped the Hawks to a 15-1 second-game win. He threw a complete game, struck out nine and scattered four hits for his third win of the season. Justin Bagbey was 2-4 at the plate with five RBIs in the win.

On Sunday, John DesChamps picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season after throwing six innings. He struck out 10 batters and gave up three hits in the 6-2 win. Anthony O’Brien and Evan Hart pitched in relief of DesChamps to help close out the win. CU’s Evan Seymour was 2-4 at the plate with two doubles while Colby Wiggins and Bagbey went 2-4.
