PETERSBURG—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team beat rival Tidewater Academy 35-32 Friday to advance to Saturday’s Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament championship.

The Lady Raiders, who avenged two regular-season losses to Tidewater, will take on No. 1 seed Amelia Academy at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Richard Bland College in Petersburg.

Rachel Holland scored 15 points for SA in Friday’s win, while teammates Sarah Best and Barclay Gatten each scored nine.

“We played a great game defensively,” said Coach Chris Pope.

SA double teamed TA leading scorer Cary Beahm and played man-to-man on Taylor Pruitt, Pope said.

“We shut down their two best players,” Pope said.

The Lady Raiders’ junior varsity team also takes on Amelia for the conference championship at 2 p.m. Saturday in Petersburg.
