SA girls win regular season finale

COURTLAND—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit for a 54-52 overtime win over Richmond Christian Thursday.

“They put a lot of pressure on us and we didn’t handle it well,” said Coach Chris Pope. “We did well to get back in the game in the second half.”

The win improves SA’s record to 14-5 overall and 11-5 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.

Rachel Holland scored 16 points in the win, while Beth Waller and Barclay Gatten added nine points each.

Holland, Waller and Kaylee Lass were honored during senior night Thursday.

The Lady Raiders will host a game Monday in the first round of the conference tournament as the third seed.

In action from Monday, the Lady Raiders lost 89-38 to top-ranked conference foe Amelia Academy. Gatten led the team with 20 points.

Morgan Pope led the junior varsity Lady Raiders to a 40-30 victory over Amelia Monday to secure a share of first place in the VCC with Amelia and Fuqua.
