SALEM—Franklin wrestlers Xavier Freeman and Emmanuel Ricks will compete in the Virginia High School League State Wrestling Championships at Salem Civic Center this weekend.
Freeman took second in the 126-pound weight class in the regional tournament last weekend to qualify for his third trip to the state tourney. The junior lost to a two-time state champion from Northampton.
“He didn’t pin him,” said Bronco Coach Daniel “Bull” Johnson. “He beat him from points.”
Ricks, a senior, will take his second trip to the state tournament after placing fourth in the 195-pound class in the region. The top four in each weight class qualified.
Ricks lost in the semi-finals after triple overtime. He injured his ribs in the match and then lost two more matches.
Johnson expects both Broncos to place in the top 10.
