COURTLAND—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team locked up at least third place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with a 34-31 win over Brunswick Academy Thursday.

The win moves the Lady Raiders to 13-4 overall and 10-4 in the VCC. It puts SA in a tie with Tidewater Academy for second in the conference, but TA holds the tie-breaker having beat SA twice in the regular season.

Lady Raider Rachel Holland scored 16 points, while teammate Barclay Gatten added eight.

Coach Chris Pope said his team overcame a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

“We had a good last three minutes,” Pope said. “We made the plays we needed to make and played good defense.”

The junior varsity Lady Raiders took a 39-14 victory over Brunswick.

The girls play undefeated conference foe Amelia at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in Amelia.
