COURTLAND—Sussex Central rode a 24-point third quarter, erasing a nine-point Southampton High School halftime lead to defeat the Indians 72-68 on Monday.

Southampton sprinted out to a 19-6 lead. A little lack of focus and hustle allowed visiting Sussex to put up the last five points of the quarter.

The second quarter saw the Indians’ lead grow by one as they were led by Travon Ellis and his 14 first-half points.

The Indians at times were up 12 points and played their entire bench during the first half. They took a 35-26 lead to the locker room.

During the third quarter, Sussex opened on an 8-0 run to pull within one, but the Indians stretched that lead back to five with less than two minutes to play. A couple of turnovers and missed layups allowed Sussex to score six unanswered points to take a 50-49 lead.

The fourth quarter saw the game go back and forth in the first two minutes, but another big run by Sussex gained the visitors a 12-point lead.

In action Friday, Southampton defeated Southside District foe Prince Edward 56-46. High scorers were Ellis and Nick Doyle with 14 each and Jay’R McCain with 13.
