WAKEFIELD—Tidewater Academy’s Hunter Haywood led all scorers with 24 points in a 58-40 victory over rival Southampton Academy Tuesday night.
Carson Camp led Southampton Academy scorers with 17 points.
The Raiders played from behind the entire game and poor shooting resulted in a 14-6 first quarter deficit. The Warriors turned that into a 33-17 lead at the half.
Raider Coach David Gibbs said the team played better in the second half as the defense and shooting improved.
“We moved the ball better and started hitting shots,” Gibbs said. “We slowed the pace a little bit.”
The Raiders were down 46-24 at the end of the third quarter.
“We shot the ball extremely well in the fourth quarter,” Gibbs said. “I’m proud of the guys. They fought back and you have to fight when you’re playing a team of that caliber.”
Tonee Hill was SA’s second leading scorer with nine points. Matt Nixon added six.
The Warriors’ Lamont Moore added 11 points in the win.
Southampton falls to 0-2 overall and in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference. Tidewater Academy improves to 4-1 and 2-0 in the VCC.
The Raiders’ next game is against Blessed Sacrament Huguenot at 7:30 p.m. today, in Powhatan. The Warriors face Steward School at 7:30 p.m. today in Wakefield.
