CARROLLTON—Friends of the Nike Skate/BMX Park on Saturday raised $1,800 for the park, which is operated by Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation Department in Carrollton Nike Park.

During the first Ramp Jam, $10 wristbands were sold for the day and a $5 entry fee was charged for the competitions. The event had 58 skateboarding and BMX biking participants, with 47 competing for the $800 in cash prizes sponsored by Blue Horseshoe Tattoo. Funds were also raised from concessions, donations, raffles and T-shirt sales.

Other sponsors were Profile Racing, Jimmy and Crystal Crawford of Hooker Bikes, Lonnie at NLC Enterprises, Justin Waddell of M.B.C BMX & SK8 Shop, Bike West in Suffolk, Papa John’s in Eagle Harbor, WRV, Pagan River Outfitters, IWAASports and Isle of Wight County Department of Parks and Recreation.

The park was closed for a couple of years due to unsafe ramp conditions. Funding from the county, along with a donation from Isle of Wight Amateur Athletics enabled the park to re-open in 2009. The county continues to support the park with some funding, but additional money is needed for the remaining ramps and other improvements.
