SHS girls sweep in region volleyball tourney opener

COURTLAND—Southampton High School girls swept Spotsylvania 3-0 in the opening round of the region volleyball tournament on Tuesday.

The Lady Indians won 25-20, 25-14, 25-18 and are 18-0 on the season.

Southampton will play either New Kent or Chancellor on Thursday, Nov. 10, in round two of the state qualifying tournament.

Leaders for Southampton were Marisa Cabell with 11 kills and four blocks, and Madison Cabell with five kills, one block, two aces and 12-12 on serving. Other leaders were Madeleine Kahle with four kills one ace and one block, and Candace Earls with 14 assists, one ace, two kills and one block

“We played our best ball of the season tonight and I don’t think we have peaked yet,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “Everyone stepped up tonight.”

“I had some good information on the other team and made some assumptions on their playing style based on what I found,” Brock added. “I asked for some specific things from the girls and they delivered.”
