Bell scores three TDs for SHS win

COURTLAND—Southampton’s Jamar Bell ran 97 yards and scored three touchdowns to help the Indians in its 54-35 win over Prince Edwards on Friday.

The Southside District victory improved the Indians’ record to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the district. Southampton qualified for the playoffs. More information will be announced next week.

Southampton rushed for 288 yards. Senior Saiquan Mason ran 149 yards on 18 carries for two touchdowns. Jerry Wright scampered for 62 yards on four carries.

Freshman kicker Russell Ballance went 6-for-8 in extra points, giving him a season record of 28-for-32.

Prince Edward ran for 188 yards and passed for 113 yards.

Prince Edward opened scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback DaVon Adams to Ralick Lockett with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Bobby Burks got the extra point.

Jaron White scored on a 27-yard run for Southampton with 7:02 left in the quarter. Ballance’s kick was good.

A recovered fumble on the kickoff by Southampton turned into a 20-yard touchdown run by Mason, giving the Indians a 14-7 lead with 5:59 left in the first quarter. The kick was good.

Mason followed with a 48-yard touchdown run with 9:50 left in the second quarter. Ballance’s extra point was good.

Bell then scored on a 3-yard run for the Indians. The kick by Ballance failed, giving the Southampton a 27-7 lead.

Wright followed with a 1-yard touchdown run. Ballance’s extra point was good.

Southampton took a 34-7 lead into the locker room.

Christian Boone opened the third quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run for the Indians. The kick failed.

Lockett scored for the Eagles on an 11-yard run with 1:38 left in the game. The two-point conversion failed.

Bell then scored for the Indians on a 15-yard run with 11:39 left in the game. Ballance’s extra point was good.

The Eagles two minutes later responded with a 21-yard touchdown run by James Jones. The two-point conversion pass was good.

With 7:39 left in the game, Adams threw 15-yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed.

Bell then scored on a one-yard run for the Indians. The kick was good.

With 2:30 left in the game, De’Von Peterson intercepted a Prince Edward pass in the end zone and ran the ball 88 yards.

Ballance came in the game as quarterback. He tried to pitch the ball to Saquan Fenner, which resulted in a fumble 17 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The Eagles recovered the fumble and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was good.
