Unbeaten SHS wins opener

COURTLAND—Southampton High School’s volleyball team improved to 16-0 after sweeping Greensville in three close sets during the opening round of the Southside District Tournament on Tuesday.

Seeded No. 1, host Southampton defeated No. 4 seed Greensville 27-25, 25-14 and 25-19. Greensville’s season came to end with the loss.

“They (Greensville) had a lot to play for,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “Both teams played well.”

Southampton at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, will host the winner of Tuesday night’s Prince Edward-Park View game; results from that game were not available as of press time.

No matter the outcome of the district tournament, Southampton has earned a berth in the Region 1 tournament, which will open at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at home.

As for the game against Greensville, Southampton led 17-9 in the first set, but Greensville came back to tie it up 22-22. Greensville hit the ball out of bounds, which sent a point and the ball to Southampton.

The game was tied again at 24-all and 25-all before Southampton got the 27-25 win.

In the second set, Southampton led the entire game, and in the third set, Greensville took a 14-9 lead, but Southampton came back after senior Candace Earls served three aces on four serves, giving the Lady Indians a 15-14 lead. Southampton held on to that lead for the 25-19 win.

Southampton senior Marisa Cabell went 15-for-15 on serves with three aces, while Earls went 14-for-15 on serves with three aces.

Cabell led in kills with seven and sophomores Kaylee Edwards and Madison Cabell added six each. Senior Merdie Ellis led with four digs and Edwards added three.
