Mason scores four TDs for SHS win

COURTLAND–Southampton High School senior Saiquan Mason rushed for 175 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns for the Indians’ 41-13 win over Park View on Friday night.

Teammate Jaron White rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman kicker Russell Ballance went 5-for-6 for extra points, improving his record to 18-for-20 on the season.

Southampton improved to 4-1, while Park View dropped to 2-2.

“The offensive line paved the way for the backs tonight,” said Southampton Coach Wes Griffith. “We found a weak spot and kept hitting it. We finally settled in on defense. I’m proud of the guys.”

Southampton rushed for 305 yards, and quarterback Mason Wright went 2-for-2, passing for 44 yards.

Parkview rushed for 204 yards and was minus 2 for passing.

Mason scored first on a 22-yard run with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Park View responded when Jarius Drummond scored on a one-yard run with 6:36 left in the quarter. Jacob Newton’s kick was good.

Mason scored on a 65-yard scamper with 3:49 left in the quarter, giving the Indians a 14-7 lead after Ballance’s kick.

White scored on a 16-yard run for the first play in the second quarter.

Park View’s Jason Baskerville scored on a 6-yard run with 5:57 left in the half. The conversion failed, making the score 21-13 in favor of the Indians.

Mason scored on a 46-yard run. Ballance missed his only field goal on the night when ball hit the crossbar with 10:30 left in the third quarter.

Mason followed with a 5-yard touchdown and White added another six points for the final score with 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

Southampton travels to Danville for a 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, game against Washington.
