FARMVILLE—The Southampton Academy volleyball team defeated Fuqua 3-1 Tuesday to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Lady Raiders went 27-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

SA Coach Sarah Nixon was pleased with the Virginia Commonwealth Conference win in Farmville.

“The (conference) is a very tough conference,” Nixon said. “All the games have been close, and tonight the girls stepped up and proved that they wanted it more.”

The Lady Raiders benefited from outstanding serving by sophomore Brook Whitley, Nixon said. Sophomore Katelyn Newsome and junior Whitley Smith combined for 17 kills.

“Everyone showed up tonight,” Nixon said. “Every player did their job and as a coach that’s all you can ask for.”

SA hosts conference foe Kenston Forest at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.
