GASBURG—Southampton High School placed three golfers in the top four for the Indians’ fourth tournament win of the season at Lake Gaston Country Club on Thursday.
Prior to this season, Southampton had never won a match in 18 years.
Southampton scored a 164 followed by Park View, 171; Prince Edward, 184; and host Greensville, 193.
Junior Billy Britton won the tournament with a 38 on the nine-hole, 36-par course. Juniors Lewis Mayes and Jordan Francis took third and fourth with a 41 and 42, respectively.
The Indians have placed second twice this season to Park View, whose top player was ill Thursday.
“That made it a little easier overall and the guys played well,” said Southampton Coach Buddy Whitehurst. “I was surprised we played well because with all the rain we’ve had, we didn’t practice all week. We had a nice day.”
Whitehurst said the fairways fared well with this week’s rain, but the greens were in rough shape, he said.
“The greens were not in the best shape for putting,” he said.
Also placing for Southampton were freshman Brandon Munford with a 43 and sixth overall and Junior Steven Rhinard with a 45 and ninth overall.
The Indians will travel to Prince Edward on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and Park View on Thursday, Sept. 15. Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
