SUFFOLK—The Southampton High School girls’ volleyball team won 25-22, 25-23 and 25-12 over host Nansemond River High School on Monday.
The Lady Indians are 2-0 on the season.
Lady Indian Madison Cabel recorded 4 aces, 2 kills and 1 block; Marisa Cabel, 1 ace, 2 kills and 3 blocks; Claire Cogsdale, 3 assists; Grayson Drake, 4 assists, 1 kill, 2 blocks; Candace Earls, 1 ace, 4 assists, 3 kills; Kaylee Edwards, 2 aces, 4 kills; Meredith Coggsdale, 2 digs; Madeleine Kahle, 3 kills 1 save; Merdie Ellis 1 dig; and Bethany Vann 1 dig and 1 save.
“They have a powerful hitter and some height in the middle that we had to overcome, but we just kept fighting and looking for opportunities,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “We made very few mistakes and were able to survive the storm when their hitter was on the front.”
During the season opener on Sept. 1, the Lady Indians defeated Franklin at home 25-10, 25-10 and 25-14.
In the match, Madison Cabel recorded 2 aces, 2 kills and a save; Marisa Cabel, 9 aces, 4 kills; Coggsdale, 1 save; Cogsdale, 1 ace, 1 assist; Drake 1 ace, 4 assists; Earls, 7 assists 1 block; Edwards, 6 aces, 5 kills, 1 save; Kahle, 2 kills; Jenna Story, 1 assist 1 kill; and Vann 1 dig.
“Franklin is much improved over last year’s squad and will continue to get better as the year progresses,” Brock said.
“We have not been able to practice very much with the weather,” he continued. “School closings and cancellations have limited our practice time, so it took us a while to get things going. We have a young group with four sophomores starting at times, but we are not inexperienced.”
The Indians will play in the second annual VA Beach High School Tournament this weekend before traveling to Windsor on Monday, Sept. 12, and Franklin on Thursday, Sept. 15.
The junior varsity team has started the season 2-0, defeating Franklin 2-0 and Nansemond River, 2-1.
