Chowan women’s cross country team takes sixth

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Chowan University women’s cross country team finished in sixth place at the Guilford College Cross Country Carnival held Saturday.

This meet marked the first competition for the newly formed program.

Freshman Gerlisa Shipman led the way for the Hawks, placing in 20th place with a time of 23:19.27. Lacey Wildeboer trekked the 5K course in 23:46.19, good for 22nd place.

Stephany Powell crossed the finish line in 25:26.30 to finish in 31st place. Coming in 46th with a time of 30:59.31 was Shaneka Sawyer. Angelica Satchell posted a time of 31:48.23 to finish in 49th place. Krystle Shifflett finished one spot behind her with a time of 32:04.05.

Kelly Montague of UNC-Greensboro won the event with a time of 19:50.99. UNC-G also won the team event, scoring 18 points.

Chowan tallied 168 points in the nine-team field.

Chowan will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when the team travels to Petersburg for the Virginia State University Cross Country Opener.
