SOUTH HILL—Southampton High School’s golf team on Thursday won its second match of the season and its second match in 18 years.

“This was our second victory with 18 years of the program,” said Indians Coach Buddy Whitehurst.

Southampton won with a 325 followed by Park View with 330, Greensville 377 and Prince Edward 427.

Southampton won the opening district tournament with a 340 followed by Park View with 357. The Indians followed by placing second to Park View in the second and third matches.

“It’s going to be us and Park View (for the district title),” Whitehurst said. “We won by only five strokes (Thursday) and they beat us by three (during the last tournament).”

Leading the Indians on Thursday was junior Billy Britton, who took first overall with a 74 on the 18-hole, par-71 course. Other top scorers for Southampton were Lewis Mayes 82, Steven Rhinard 84, and Jordan Francis and Brandon Mumford, both 85.

“The kids came out and played very well,” Whitehurst said. “They had a nice day for it. It wasn’t too hot. The greens were so much better, and the ball really rolled well. They putted well today.”

Greensville will host the next match at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Lake Gaston Country Club.
