COURTLAND—The Southampton High School softball team finished its regular season 11-3 in the Southside District and tied for second for a second year in a row.
The Lady Indians, who are 16-3 overall, at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, will host the opening game of the district tournament. No. 2-ranked Southampton will take on No. 3 Bluestone.
On Wednesday, Southampton brought an impressive end to an impressive regular season after defeating Prince Edward 9-1, said coach Susan Melbye.
Senior Regina Artis hit two in-the-park home runs for four RBIs.
Ashlee Buehner, pitching back-to-back days for the first time this season, scattered five hits and pitched around seven walks. Buehner got out of a jam in the top of the sixth, one of two true threats Prince Edward mounted all afternoon, Melbye said.
A pair of singles opened the frame, but a slick play by Madison Cabell at third, Megan Revelle throwing out an attempted steal and Buehner closing the door with one of her five strikeouts ended the threat.
In the top of the seventh, Prince Edward put a run on the board, using a pair of walks. After a pair of flyouts to left fielder LeAndra Watford, a single brought in the lone Prince Edward run. Buehner’s fifth strikeout brought an end to the game.
Seniors Carla Matthews and Artis were each 2-for-4; Revelle and LeAndra Watford were 1-4; and Amanda Johnson was 0-3, with a walk.
In all, the seniors were responsible for seven Indian runs, five RBIs, three stolen bases and the pair of in-the-park home runs.
The big inning for the ladies was the fourth, where they knocked out four hits, drew three walks and sent 10 hitters to the plate.
Artis’ home run was a highlight, but an RBI triple by Revelle also drew applause from the crowd, Melbye said.
