COURTLAND—Southampton High School senior Carla Matthews led the Lady Indians to a 12-2 softball win over Greensville on Tuesday by going 4-for-4, including a double, triple and an RBI.

During the Lady Indians’ 17-hit attack, Ashlee Buehner went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs.

Emilee Nelson went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in a run. Marissa Cabell went 2-for-3, including a triple, reached once on an error and scored three runs.

Senior Regina Artis went 2-for-3 with an RBI single.

The Indians put up single runs in the first and third innings, four runs in the second and fourth, and coupled another pair in the fifth, giving the ladies a 12-run total, which brought the game to an end with no outs in the home half of the fifth with the mercy rule.

Buehner gave up four hits while striking out six and walked three.

Greensville had a rally in the top of the third, putting both of their runs on the board. One was unearned on a throwing error. The throw glanced off the Greensville runner and went out of play, allowing her to score.

Buehner then sent the next three Eagle hitters back to the dugout in order.

“The lone error was the only blemish in an impressive defensive performance by the home team,” said Southampton Coach Susan Melbye.
