POWHATAN—Southampton High School girls’ softball team lost its second game of the season to Southside District opponent Powhatan Thursday.

The 3-0 loss was the second one to Powhatan this year.

“The Lady Indians struggled with hitting yesterday with only having two hits on the day,” said SHS Coach Susan Melbeye.

Carla Matthews started the game with a base hit up the middle, but was gunned down trying to steal second.

The Indians did not have another base runner until the top of the seventh inning when freshman Kaylee Edwards got a hit.

Powhatan’s Rachel Walters gave the Indians a struggle by striking out eight batters.

Powhatan had six hits on the day. One run was unearned in the top of the first inning.

Southampton has two weeks left in the regular season and is seeded second for the district tournament.

The Lady Indians will travel to Brunswick on Monday, May 9.
