COURTLAND—Southampton Academy softball fell 7-0 in its final game of the regular season on Wednesday to Virginia Commonwealth Conference foe Brunswick Academy.
The loss drops the Lady Raiders to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in the VCC.
Southampton Academy will play in the conference tournament beginning Tuesday, May 10. As of Friday, the site of the first round was unknown, however, the semifinal and final rounds will be played in Richmond.
SA Coach Jeb Bradshaw said he was proud of the young team for playing hard this season despite losing five seniors from last year’s team.
“They matured a lot through the season, and I look forward to the tournament,” Bradshaw said.
He said most of the starters from this year’s team would return next year. Centerfielder Catherine Glover and pitcher Taylor Bradshaw are seniors.
Bradshaw said while the team’s seniors would be missed, there is a lot of talent coming up next year.
Junior Beth Waller led the team in hitting with a .328 batting average through 64 at-bats. Waller also had the most hits with 21.
Sophomore Kate Wachsmann had two homeruns. Junior Chelsea Speight led in RBIs with 20 and had six doubles. Senior Taylor Bradshaw was tops in triples with three.
Speight was 5-9 from the mound and had an earned-run average of 2.51.
Bradshaw had eight appearances as a pitcher. She won one game and lost two and had an ERA of 2.30.
