WAKEFIELD—Senior Martin Hellyer pitched for the first time since his sophomore year as Tidewater Academy swept a doubleheader with Ameilia Tuesday.
Hellyer pitched two innings of relief in the first game – a 24-7 Warrior win – and was the winning pitcher in a 10-5 victory in game two.
Hellyer was forced to set out all of last season with arm and knee injuries.
“We’ve been slow coming back with his arm this season,” said Coach Paul Rogers. “This was his first time pitching since sophomore year.”
James Price pitched two innings in relief of Hellyer in game two and Josh Clarke pitched one inning.
Senior Ferley Yerby hit a homerun in game two and Dale Rickmond had two triples in the game.
Jimmy Rogers picked up the win for the Warriors in game one to improve his record to 6-1 on the year.
Rogers helped his won cause at the plate hitting a homerun, while Hunter Haywood smashed a triple.
TA sits at 14-4 on the season with one game remaining to determine its position in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament, which begins Tuesday, May 10.
