COURTLAND—Southampton High School pitchers Candace Earls and Ashlee Buehner combined for a four-hitter during Tuesday’s 9-1 Southside District win over Brunswick in Courtland.

The Indians are 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the district. They will travel to Powhatan for a first-place showdown on Thursday. Powhatan is responsible for the only blemish on Southampton’s record.

On Tuesday, Earls pitched the first five innings, earning the win, and allowing the only Bulldog run, which was unearned.

“The Southampton hurlers overcame four fielding errors and a pair of walks to limit the Bulldog offensive threats,” said Coach Susan Melbye. “It was a tight ball game through 5½ innings as Southampton was unable to put together a big inning, but built a 5-1 lead.”

That all changed in the bottom of the sixth as the Indians plated four runs, securing the final score of 9-1.

The Indians were led by Buehner, who went 2-for-3 at the plate. She scored a run, ripped an RBI double and put down a sacrifice bunt.

Madison Cabell reached base four times, scoring three times. She was hit by a pitch, walked twice and ripped a double to the gap in the four-run, sixth inning.

Freshmen Kaylee Edwards went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning and a pair of defensive gems in centerfield.
