Speight drives in winning run for SA

COURTLAND—Southampton Academy junior Chelsea Speight drove in Catherine Glover to seal a comeback 4-3 softball victory for the Lady Raiders over Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Wednesday.
BSH opened the scoring in the first inning, but the Lady Raiders tied the game. BSH took the lead back before Southampton Academy tied it up in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Speight, who went 3-for-4, scored Glover to put SA up for good at 4-3.
“The girls hit the ball when they needed to and we were able to put one in the win column,” coach Jeb Bradshaw said.
Winning pitcher Taylor Bradshaw scattered four hits and struck out 11 during the game.
In action Monday, Southampton Academy lost 13-7 to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk.
Speight gave up 11 hits, walked two and struck out five.
Scoring runs were Beth Waller and Brigitte Bradshaw, with two each, and Skylar Goodman, Rachel Holland and Taylor Bradshaw, with one a piece.
On April 15, the Lady Raiders fell 4-2 to Kenston Forest during a home Virginia Commonwealth Conference game.
Losing pitcher Taylor Bradshaw gave up seven hits, two walks and struck out seven batters.
Goodman and Taylor Bradshaw each had a RBI.
SA is 4-9 overall and 3-6 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.
