SA girls’ tennis team finishes third in VCC

COURTLAND—Southampton Academy locked up third place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with a 6-5 record after closing its regular season this week with a win over Fuqua School and a loss to Steward School.

SA defeated Fuqua School 8-1 Thursday.

Barclay Gatten defeated Jenka Sebestova 8-3 in the No.1 singles match. Jessica Porter defeated Micaelo Atkinson 8-0. Ginny Taylor beat Stacy Dixon 8-3. Courtney Beltrami defeated Aurelie Foster 8-2. Meagan Dail beat Savanna Hutchinson 8-1 and Megan Drewry lost 8-4 to Hanna Harjn.

In doubles, Gatten and Porter defeated Sebestova and Atkinson. Taylor and Beltrami beat Dixon and Hutchinson 8-3. Dail and Drewry defeated Harjn and Foster 8-3.

The doubles team of Gatten and Porter was the only bright spot for the Lady Raiders in Richmond Wednesday as they fell 8-1 to Steward.

Gatten and Porter avenged an earlier loss to Steward with an 8-3 win. The victory ties Gatten and Porter for first in the conference in doubles.

Kirsten Wachsmann, Rebecca Lewis and Olivia Fox participated in exhibition matches.
