SHS boys fall to Powhatan 8-1

COURTLAND—Southampton High School’s baseball team was handed its first loss of the season to Powhatan on Wednesday.
The Indians lost 8-1 in the Southside District match-up. Their overall record is 5-1 and district record 3-1. Powhatan is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the district.
Southampton senior Billy Nixon gave up five runs, of which three were earned, during five innings. Nixon walked two and struck out six. He gave up five hits including one double and four singles.
Powhatan’s Dutch Crone pitched the entire game, giving up four hits and one earned run. He struck out four.
For the Indians, Hayden Spalding went 2-for-3, including a double. Zach Vann and Nixon went 1-for-3; Vann hit a double and got an RBI.
On the Powhatan side, Tyler Allen went 2-for-2. Bryce Hylton went 1-for-3.
Powhatan had eight hits and two errors and scored one in the first second innings, two in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Southampton had four hits and three errors. The only run was scored in the fifth.
