RICHMOND—The Southampton Academy golf team lost in a three-team match Thursday against conference foe Steward School and Collegiate School at Sycamore Creek Golf Course.

SA put up a score of 197, while Steward scored a 170 and Collegiate shot a 151.

Marlin McClelland led the Raiders with a 47 in nine holes. David Bogese and Michael Bunch both shot 51 each. Madison Trumble put together a score of 54 and Taylor Edwards shot a 61 on the day.

Coach David Gibbs said the weather conditions played a big role in Thursday’s scores.

“The conditions were horrible,” Gibbs said. “It was 38 degrees, drizzly, and the wind was blowing.”

Gibbs said he is proud of the improvement the team has shown in the last few years. He said when he first took the program over, a bad day would result in a team score of over 200, but the team played poorly Thursday and still kept it under 200.

“It’s back to the driving range to fix some things,” Gibbs said.

SA’s next match is on the road against Banner Christian on Tuesday, April 5. The school then plays its first home match against Kenston Forest at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin.
