FRANKLIN—Three J.P. King Middle School students were recognized for earning the highest grade-point average during the recent Franklin Department of Parks and Recreation’s Intramural Basketball League for Boys and Girls.

Kamla Jackson was the girls’ winner with a 3.5 GPA, and Kendall Butler and Ryan Godwin tied for the boys with a 3.7 average.

J.P. King and the Department of Parks and Recreation, co-sponsors of the Intramural Basketball League for Boys and Girls, held a season-ending awards banquet to honor players, coaches and volunteers.

Mona Murphy, vice chairwoman of the Franklin School Board, and Yvonne Rose, legislative assistant to Delegate Roslyn Tyler, D-Jarratt, spoke to the players on the importance of education.

The Rev. Keith Rose was the guest speaker and delivered a message to the youth on problems they will encounter in life, and emphasized to the parents the greater role they need to play to have a positive impact on their children.

At the conclusion of the banquet, players and coaches received trophies for participation.

The purpose of this league is to provide an after-school activity for the students that promotes education, social skills, responsibility, fun, teamwork and discipline.
