Smith strikes out 12 in SA conference win

COURTLAND—Southampton Academy’s Garrett Smith struck out 12 batters during Monday’s 7-2 win over Amelia Academy in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference game.

Amelia Academy scored in the first inning with a leadoff double and an infield error.

Host Southampton Academy gained the lead in the third inning with a leadoff triple from Wesley Barnes followed by RBI singles from Matt Nixon and Will Edwards.

Amelia tied the game in the fifth inning , but SA regained it in the bottom of the sixth with timely hits by Ryan Pittman, John Hinkle  and a sacrifice bunt by Charlie Webb.

The Raiders finished the inning by scoring 5 runs, which sealed the win.

The Raiders will travel to Steward School today,

March 23.

In action from Friday, Nixon struck out nine batters and allowed 2 hits in five innings during the Raiders’ 10-1 win against Surry.

Barnes closed out the game with 2 strikeouts in the final two innings.

Offensively, the Raiders scored 2 runs in the first inning on a double by Barnes. Another run was added in the third inning with a leadoff hit by Barnes.

Edwards and Carson Camp added hits in the fourth and fifth innings that produced 2 more runs. The Raiders continued to score through the seventh inning.

Defensively, the Raiders played without error. Surry’s only run came in the sixth inning from a walk, a hit and a sacrifice fly.

Southampton Academy is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
